Xtremism Educational Resource Pack

Xtremism Educational Resource Pack

Resource for educators to help counter radicalisation

Today's digital age brings about many benefits, namely an instant stream of knowledge. We are never a few clicks away from finding the answers to our questions but there is a growing concern that it is able to serve individuals who wish harm on society. Extremism is a plague and media is one of the tools used to misinform, recruit and even school impressionable minds. As a theatre and film company founded to counter many social ills, our latest offering is a new DVD educational resource pack that can aid in the fight against extremist thinking and behaviour.

Film has the power to engage with its audience and can have a lasting impact. If you appeal to their imagination by entertaining and educating in equal measure, then you have the potential for positive change. Engaging through creativity means we can compliment the national the curriculum but just as importantly nurture a person's moral standing and encourage debate, in short, the all important life skills.

Our film, entitled 'Xtremism', was first staged in Bradford in 2011 to mainly secondary school age pupils and college students. The fictional narrative looks at the character of 'Ryan', a dual-heritage teenager who is drawn into radical thinking/behaviour by two opposing forces - Islamic and the Far-Right.  Our message is clear; by engaging in such activity only results in a negative outcome regardless of what form of extremism you subscribe to.

The DVD resource pack is designed for any educator working with young people both in mainstream, alternative and informal educational settings for ages 12 and above, with a focus on addressing Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural well being (SMSC).

The pack consists of the play (filmed professionally) and 9 workshops that link to the curriculum for young people to engage with. The workshops categories are...

- Extremism
- Religion
- Identity
- Prejudice
- Gender Equality
- Peer Pressure
- School and Work Life

- History

…which link to the following subjects:

Lasting the duration of one class, each workshop encourages pupils to work as individuals and in groups, involving discussions, short writing tasks and creating short drama's.
