Staging at The MAC

In March 2011 we re-staged the show that officially launched Arakan; 'Hijaab'. It was a in December 2009 that we first brought this to life in The Bradford Playhouse and Alhamdulillah (praise be to God) along with more commissioned performances, Hijaab has entertained, educated and been trigger for interesting debate during 2010.

The story...

Having recently converted to Islam, uni student Maria is slowly adapting to her new lifestyle. Whilst some changes are easy, others are not and one of her biggest challenges is the Hijaab (headscarf). Living with two Muslim housemates, Amreena & Neelam, should make it easier but their views and behaviour don’t sit comfortably with Maria. Not providing a balanced opinion, Maria must walk this journey alone - but hers will be the most enlightening.

Throughout the play, we also answer an intriguing question: 'What would the Hijaab say if it could talk'?

The staging was at the Midland Arts Centre (MAC) in Birmingham and we are hoping to return there later in the year. Keep an eye out for our updates.

For more details about the show, or for enquiries about commissioning a performance,  please email Arakan on the 'Contact Us' page.
